When Tesla emigrated to the United States in 1884, he arrived with only a few cents in his pocket, some of his poems and blueprints for a flying device He began by working with Thomas Edison, but the two men soon parted because of their vast ethnic and methodology differences. By offering his patent legal rights to his electrical induction generator to George Westinghouse in 1885, Tesla sparked the intense debate between the Westinghouse Electric Company and Edison's company over the use of direct current or alternating current in electric power distribution. The Edison system developed direct current, while the Tesla-Westinghouse technique produced the alternating current which eventually won out.
While working with Westinghouse, Tesla conducted numerous experiments in his own laboratory with carbon button lights, electrical resonance, and lightning. He presented presentations in which he lit light bulbs using his body as a conductor, and he traveled worldwide to allay fears about the imagined potential risks of alternating-current electrical power. Tesla invented the Tesla coil in 1891--a device that produces high-frequency electrical power that is often used in electronic models and radio communications. Tesla conducted later experiments on wireless transmission of electrical current and wireless communications now known as the Tesla Generator.
