Understanding Dog First Aid Is Much More Than Just Owning A First Aid Kit

You certainly have heard the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are every bit as bad since they are rather inquisitive and have a habit of going places and getting into circumstances that they shouldn't. Even though this doesn't always end badly, they in some cases do end up harming themselves by some means so it's a wise decision to be aware of some dog first aid.

Somewhere around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she managed to discover a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and chose to play there for awhile. By the time she came back to the house the burrs had already worked themselves firmly into places on her face, her ears and her little behind.

It was nighttime so the Vet was not open and a trip to the animal hospital would definitely have been too expensive. So she had to endure my tearful yet laughing attempts as I managed to one by one manipulate those burrs out of her hair as she struggled and yelped for at least two hours. They were matted so severely and close up to the skin that cutting them out was not possible.

A tranquilizer would have been perfect but I didn't have a single thing for her. And since there was no blood or major injury, visiting the emergency hospital was not necessary ... that time.

That is a heart breaking yet comical story to describe and hopefully an experience she has blotted out over time. It was also a less serious thing although very painful and stressful for both of us. But it might have been even worse.

As a committed dog owner you should certainly know at least basic first aid for dogs in order to be prepared for more extreme emergencies. You oftentimes will be able to save on Vet expenses for minor problems like the one I had. But you might also feel the need to help alleviate your dog's pain or engage in life-saving actions until you can arrive at the Vet.

Having a dog first aid kit is positively a wise decision but you also need to know how to handle things in a true emergency. Always have phone numbers conveniently located for both your regular Vet as well as the nearest animal emergency clinic. And become skilled at basic canine first aid for yourself.

I've never had to provide life-saving medical actions for my four-legged friend and maybe you haven't had to either. But would you know what on earth to do if faced with a life-threatening situation that involved your pet dog?
